2017 Fall Front Porch and Entryway

Like many others, fall is a favorite time of year for me. I love the gorgeous bright and rich colors of fall and I love incorporating those colors into my indoor and outdoor home decor. I know some people start decorating for Christmas at 12am on November 1st, and although I think that’s pretty awesome, I prefer to wait until Thanksgiving is over to give up the fall decor. I typically start decorating for fall sometime in September (after the back-to-school chaos settles down), and I like to leave it up until the day after Thanksgiving, when I joyfully pack it away and break out the Christmas decor. I like to leave lots of time to soak up those pretty colors, and with the weather having been unseasonably warm for an unusual amount of time this fall, we have been able to enjoy the fall colors on the trees for longer than normal as well. We’re a week into November and there are quite a few trees still holding their leaves here in Michigan, which isn’t very common, but I’m not complaining! That equals a great autumn season for me!

For me, decorating is like sculpting. I often start with a few pieces as my base and then mold the design from there. I add layers by incorporating different sizes and heights. For my fall porch, I started with a few pumpkins and a beautiful autumn wreath. I knew I wanted to add garden mums, and I went on the hunt for a darker red color to bring out the red tips on the leaves in my wreath and to complement the other fall tones.

I found this beautiful small plant for only $4.50 vs. the $20 large plants that were also available! Because it was such a small pot of flowers, I knew I needed some sort of a stand to add some height, as they sat at the same level and height as the pumpkins on their own. This cute old chippy chair is a decorative piece I borrowed from inside. After adding the red garden mums to my fall porch “sculpture”, I searched my decor stash and added the lantern and dollar store flame-less candle. Next, I added the cornstalks, which were given to me by a lovely friend, and then more pumpkins.

I played around with the placement of the pumpkins quite a bit before I settled on the final look, and not only did I like the look, but I liked having six pumpkins on the one side for the six members of our family. 🙂

I love the porches with pots and pots of garden mums and piles on piles of pumpkins, but I was working with a fairly small budget this year. The final look actually took me a couple of weeks to complete, as I’d buy a little here and there. The whole fall porch look came in at about $50, including the wreath, which I purchased at Marshall’s. The pumpkins ranged from $1-$5 and the garden mums, as stated above, were $4.50.

Decorating for fall inside our house is a little different than decorating outside as we have a 1 1/2 year old who LOVES to get into EVERYTHING. Because of our sweet little monster, I tend to keep the indoor fall decor pretty simple.

Sometimes the best decor isn’t decor at all. A mix of plaids and fall colors hang on our coat rack by the door. It’s always good to keep some scarves and sweaters handy for the chilly fall weather, and of course, mud boots are the perfect fall staple as well! Sweaters, scarves, and Hunter boots totally give me the fall feels!

The entire fall entryway look consists of a few pumpkins, a smaller fall wreath, some artificial fall leaf decor, an adorable little scarecrow, and some normal everyday items that just happen to add to the overall fall decor. The only things I purchased new for the entryway were the pumpkins, and the garland, wreath, stems, and scarecrow were all items I reused from previous years. You can easily add the cozy fall feel with minimal effort by keeping the fall theme simple and using everyday items that are likely to be laying around this time of year anyways.
