Do you ever find it to be overwhelming decorating for each season and holiday? Maybe you don’t even decorate seasonally because it’s so overwhelming or the budget just doesn’t allow for changing out your decor so frequently? All out decorating for each season and holiday can be a lot of fun, but if the budget doesn’t allow for it or you simply don’t have the time to change your decor that often, there is a way to minimize the change and stay within budget. One trick to seasonal decor that I have come to love is pairing your seasons and finding decor staples that will work through multiple seasons and holidays. Here in Michigan, it starts getting cold in the fall (it snowed a few times already!) and it stays cold through winter and often even part of spring. For this reason, I like to pair fall and winter and select as many “cold weather” decor styles that will work starting in the fall and last through the winter, even beyond the holiday season. You can of course select as many styles and pieces that you can find to fit your style and work for the seasons, but here are seven of my favorite transitional styles to decorate for fall all the way through winter:

1.Plaid Decor- Plaid is such a fun way to decorate because it comes in so many different colors and styles. There is just something that feels cozy about it. When choosing a plaid to display through both fall and winter, try selecting a pattern in more neutral tones, such as grays, browns, beige, black, or even shades of cream and white. If you’d like the plaid piece to last you through both seasons, try not to choose colors that are too season/holiday specific. For example, you might want to steer clear of bright red and green (a very Christmas-y combo) and orange can feel more fall-ish but not usually very winter-y. A darker red plaid could be a beautiful pattern to carry you through both seasons. Buffalo plaid (or buffalo check) is one of my favorite patterns to use and it comes in several color combinations, usually without seeming too season specific. If you select a color combo that doesn’t scream FALL or CHRISTMAS, you can definitely get away with keeping your plaid decor out well past Christmas.

2. Faux Fur Decor- When the weather is cold, what’s more cozy than a fuzzy faux fur blanket or pillow to cuddle up with? Those fuzzy furry pieces are both decorative and functional, adding style and warmth to your home. Because faux fur pieces are typically neutral in color and they serve as functional decor all through the cold weather season, they are a perfect transitional style starting in the fall and lasting all through the winter, even after Christmas has ended. A faux fur piece or two can really cozy up a room!

3. Knit/Crochet Decor- Very similar to the faux fur, knit and crochet throw blankets and pillows also serve as functional yet beautiful decor. Chunky knit throws are pretty popular right now, and aside from being a warm blanket to snuggle up under, they make a space feel super comfy and cozy. You typically find these pieces in solid colors, and as long as you don’t choose a color that’s too season specific (orange always feels very fall-ish to me because it’s not a norm in my decor, but I’m sure there are beautiful ways to incorporate it all year long), crochet and knit decor pieces are great for all of fall and winter.

4. Wood Decor- Adding wood decor is one of my favorites for both fall and winter. My everyday decor isn’t all that rustic, but I love adding little rustic touches for both the fall and winter seasons. I think of a cabin or ski lodge feel, and that feels like a great cold weather style to me. You can add wood decor in so many ways. If you have a fireplace, having a stack of firewood can be both functional and beautiful. Extra wood frames, maybe with a more raw finish, are a great way to include more wood decor for the cold weather seasons. There are wood wreaths, wood garlands, wood bowls and figurines, wooden crates or boxes, wood branches (birch branches are very popular decor), and the list goes on. There are so many ways to incorporate any color, type, or finish of wood into your decor to add that rustic and/or cozy touch without being season or holiday specific.

5. Metal Decor- Metal decor is a really fun style to play with! You can stick to a theme of one type of metal or you can mix your metals to provide visual interest. I recently used copper in a fall table setting, and it was a perfect pop of shiny in a gorgeous fall tone. Copper is just as gorgeous, though, in a Christmas or winter setting. Metal decor can dress up a space or vignette while also adding contrast to softer pieces and decor. Although metal can dress up your decor, it’s a common enough everyday item that it doesn’t always have to be dressy either. Mixing metals can offer a beautiful variety of cool and warm tones, finishes, and even textures and creates a more collected look.

6. Deer/Elk/Moose/Antler Decor- Using deer, elk, moose, or antlers in your fall and winter decor is another rustic touch that doesn’t have to be season or holiday specific. For these pieces, you’ll want to look for items that aren’t in holiday color schemes or embellished with fall leaves, Christmas wreaths, etc.. I often find throws or pillows with a basic deer, elk, or moose outline, sometimes with a little bit of plaid added. These are great multi-season decor options. A metal or wood carved deer would be another beautiful decorative piece that you could put out for both fall and winter. You could also use deer or elk antlers in your decor as a beautiful natural element to display through both seasons. I would avoid choosing reindeer for this style, as it will probably seem too Christmas specific.

7. Candles- Candles can be great decorative pieces that last you all through the fall and winter seasons. I love sticking with mostly all white candles, because they’re classic, cozy, and simply beautiful. They can also be super inexpensive! You can use them for a table centerpiece, on a mantel, on a shelf, in a non-functioning fireplace, or pretty much anywhere. Candles provide a beautiful glow and warmth and can set a relaxing and/or romantic mood. With candles, you have fire, and fire during the cold season offers warmth and coziness. Obviously, you want to be safe with candles, but if you use them safely, they are a perfect way to decorate all the way through the cold weather seasons.

I know there are several more colors, textures, and styles that can carry through the seasons, but these were just a few of my favorites. If you’re interested in finding items similar to those pictured or listed, I put together a collection of items that you can shop online! You can check them out in the slider below:

Choosing cozy pieces for the cold weather seasons that aren’t season specific can help cut back on your seasonal decor budget and save you a little extra work too; all while making your home comfy, cozy, and beautiful all fall and winter long!
